LESSON 5

THE LAST PLAGUE ON EGYPT

(You can read about this in Exodus Chapters 11 and 12.)

Yahweh sent one last punishment on the Egyptians. The punishment was to be so bad that the king would want the Israelites to get out of Egypt.

Moses said to the king, “Yahweh says to you, ‘At about midnight I will go through Egypt, and every firstborn son in Egypt will die, from the king’s son, to the sons of the slaves. The firstborn of all the cattle will die also.

‘There will be loud crying all over Egypt, such as there has never been before or will ever be again. But none of the Israelites or their animals will feel any pain. Then you will know that I, Yahweh, make the distinction between the Egyptians and the Israelites.’”

Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron in Egypt and said to them, “This month is to be the first month of the year for you. Give these instructions to all of Israel. On the tenth day of this month each man must choose either a lamb or a young goat for his household.

“If his family is too small to eat all of an animal, he and his next door neighbor may share an animal. The sheep or goat must be a one-year-old male without any defects.

“Then on the evening of the fourteenth day of the month, the whole community of Israel will kill the animals.

Yahweh continues with His directions to Moses and Aaron and says, “Then they are to take some of the blood and put it on the sides and tops of the door frames of the houses where they eat the lambs. That same night, they are to eat the meat roasted over the fire, along with bitter herbs, and bread made without yeast. Do not eat the meat raw or cooked in water, but roast it over the fire—head, legs and inner parts. Do not leave any of it till morning; if some is left till morning, you must burn it.”

Yahweh even told them how they were to be dressed for this occasion and said, “This is how you are to eat it; with your cloak tucked into your belt, your sandals on your feet and your staff in your hand. Eat it in haste, it is Yahweh’s Passover.”

He continues to explain, “On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn—both men and animals—and I will bring judgment on all the mighty ones of Egypt. I am Yahweh.”

“The blood on the door posts will be a sign to mark the houses in which you live. When I see the blood, I will pass over you and will not harm you when I punish the Egyptians. You must celebrate this day as a religious festival to remind you of what I have done. Celebrate it forever.”

Yahweh said, “For seven days you must not eat any bread made with yeast, eat only unleavened bread. On the first day you are to get rid of all the yeast in your houses, for this is a sign of my people. On the first day and again on the seventh day you are to meet for worship. No work is to be done on those days, but you may prepare food. Keep this festival, because it was on this day that I brought your tribes out of Egypt.

“For all the time to come you must celebrate this day as a festival. From the evening of the fourteenth day of the first month to the evening of the twenty-first day, you must not eat any bread made with yeast. He who eats leavened bread shall no longer be considered one of my people.”

Now after receiving all of Yahweh’s instructions, Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and told them to go at once and select the animals for their families and slaughter the Passover lamb. Then he explained further, “Take a bunch of hyssop, dip it into the blood in the basin and put some of the blood on the top and on both sides of the door frame.” He also told them NOT to leave their houses until morning and assured the Israelites that Yahweh would not permit the destroyer to enter their houses when he sees the blood on the top and sides of the door frames, so that no one would be destroyed in that house.

As he was finishing giving the instructions, he told the Israelites, “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your descendants. When you enter the land that Yahweh will give you as he promised, observe this ceremony. And when your children ask you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ then tell them, ‘It is the Passover sacrifice to Yahweh, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’ Then the people bowed down and worshiped. The Israelites did just what Yahweh commanded Moses and Aaron.”

Yahweh always means what he says. At midnight, all the firstborn in Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh to the firstborn of the prisoner, and the firstborn of all the livestock as well were struck down dead. Pharaoh and all his officials and all the Egyptians got up during the night, and there was loud wailing for there was not one house in Egypt without someone dying.

That same night the king sent to Moses and Aaron and said, “You and your Israelites get out! Leave my country; go and worship Yahweh as you asked. Take your sheep, goats, cattle and leave.”

The Egyptians urged the people to hurry and leave the country. They said, “We will all be dead if you don’t leave.” So the people filled their baking pans with unleavened dough, wrapped them in clothing, and carried them on their shoulders.

The Israelites had done as Moses had said, and had asked the Egyptians for gold and silver jewelry and for clothes. Yahweh made the Egyptians respect the people and give them what they asked for. In this way the Israelites were able to carry away the wealth of the Egyptians.
